When I was sorting my bookshelf recently, I found a long-unopened copy of Uncle Tom’s Cabin. To be honest, I have always heard of this book. After all, it plays an important role in the history of American literature and is said to have influenced the outbreak of the American Civil War. With curiosity about this period of history, I decided to open it again to see what kind of charm this work has.
Plot Summary
Uncle Tom’s Cabin was written by American female writer Harriet Beecher Stowe and published in 1852. The story is centered on Uncle Tom and tells the tragic experience of black slaves under the slavery system in the American South.
At the beginning of the story, Mr. Shelby, a slave owner in Kentucky, faced a serious debt crisis due to failed investments. In desperation, he decided to sell two slaves to repay his debts. These two slaves were Tom and Harry. Tom was a loyal and capable slave of the Shelby family. His wife and children were all in the manor. Harry was the son of the maid Eliza. When Eliza heard the news, she was extremely worried and fled with Harry overnight.
Uncle Tom did not choose to escape. He believed that he was loyal to his master and should obey his arrangement. So, Tom was taken away by the slave trader and embarked on an unknown journey. On the way, Uncle Tom met the kind girl Evangeline, who begged her father St. Clare to buy Uncle Tom. St. Clare was a kind master who treated slaves like family members. Uncle Tom had a relatively happy life in St. Clare’s house and established a deep friendship with Eva, a child in the family. However, St. Clare was hated by the slave owners for launching the slave liberation movement and eventually died in an assassination. Uncle Tom fell into the hands of slave traders again and was sold to the cruel slave owner Simon Legory (Wrigley). Under Legory’s hands, Tom was abused, but he still maintained his kindness and religious beliefs. Uncle Tom sympathized with the tragic life of the slave girl Cathy. In order to save her, he encountered a car accident and was seriously injured. In the end, Uncle Tom died tragically under the persecution of the slave owner.
” From now on, you are all free. “
The ending of the novel is full of hope. George Shelby freed his slaves and said, ” From now on, you are all free. ” This scene brought tears to my eyes. Although Tom did not live to see this day, his sacrifice was not in vain. Like a seed, his spirit was sown in the hearts of more people and eventually bore the fruit of freedom.
