I recently had the pleasure of reading the new book , The Tale of Genji. I read it with great personal interest .
The Tale of Genji was written during the Heian period in Japan in the early 11th century. It is recognized as the world’s first novel, has a profound influence on the development of Japanese culture and literature, and enjoys a very high reputation internationally.
background
The Heian period was the golden age of Japanese literature. At that time, Japan gradually got rid of the profound influence of Chinese culture and developed its own syllable writing system – kana. The Tale of Genji was written in kana, which laid a new foundation for Japanese calligraphy. At that time, the power of the emperor declined, and the Fujiwara family and other powerful families controlled the actual power of the country. The nobles lived a refined and intrigue-filled life. The Tale of Genji vividly shows the court life of this period.

Storyline
The book revolves around the fictional Prince Genji, with a total of 54 chapters. Genji himself is a prince. Because his mother was born of a low birth and had no backing, it was difficult for him to gain a foothold, so he was demoted to a minister and given the name Genji. In theory, this arrangement would give Genji the opportunity to further develop according to his own achievements. Genji was young, handsome, charming, socially prominent and wealthy, so young women flocked to him. He had many legendary stories. His mother died when he was a child. When he grew up, he actually fell in love with his nominal stepmother, Fujitsubo. The two secretly got together and had a child. This relationship, which was not recognized by the world, completely changed Genji’s life. Since then, he has been sinking deeper and deeper into the quagmire of emotions. There are many women around Genji, and each of them has her own story. Murasaki looks very much like Fujitsubo, and Genji took her home to take care of her because she was young. As time went by, the two developed feelings. Murasaki was gentle and considerate, but Genji was too fickle, which made her sad and helpless. Princess Rokujo loved too deeply, and in the end she turned to hate because of love. Her resentment was so strong that she even killed Yugao with her soul leaving her body. Aoi-hime was Genji’s legal wife. She was arrogant and had a bad relationship with Genji. In that era when men could marry many wives, the fate of these women was very tragic, which also showed us how helpless and sad women were in the patriarchal society in ancient times.
In any case, I sincerely recommend it to anyone who has a keen interest in ancient Japanese culture. I believe you will also get a unique reading experience from this literary masterpiece that spans thousands of years.
