“1984” is a classic by George Orwell, depicting a terrifying scene in which personal freedom is suppressed and thoughts are controlled in a totalitarian society. This is the most frightening book I have ever read. It is not scary but deeply frightening. While reading, I was shocked by the profound exploration of power, freedom and thought control in the novel.
Background
When George Orwell wrote 1984, the world had just experienced World War II and the shadow of the Cold War gradually enveloped the world. Orwell himself had rich experience in political activities. He participated in the Spanish Civil War and witnessed the horror of totalitarianism. These experiences profoundly influenced his creation. In the book, he incorporated his fear and criticism of totalitarianism into the story, constructing a chilling future world.
“ Big Brother is watching you ”
The story takes place in the fictional Oceania, a society ruled by the totalitarian government “Ingsoc”. In this world, “Big Brother” monitors every citizen through telescreens everywhere, and people’s thoughts and behaviors are strictly controlled. History can be tampered with at will, language is simplified into “Newspeak” to restrict the expression of thoughts, and even emotions and sex are distorted. The protagonist Winston Smith is an ordinary employee of the “Ministry of Truth” responsible for revising historical records. But deep in his heart, he is full of doubts about the existing social order and longs for freedom and true emotions. He falls in love with Julia, and this relationship becomes a way for him to resist totalitarian rule. They secretly join the resistance organization and try to overthrow the rule of “Big Brother”. However, under the close surveillance of the totalitarian society, their resistance ultimately fails. Winston was arrested by the Thought Police, suffered cruel torture and brainwashing, and was eventually completely transformed into a person who completely obeys “Big Brother”.

“The struggle between power, freedom and control of thought is an eternal theme in human history”
Although the novel is full of descriptions of despair and despair, there are still sparks of hope. Winston and Julia’s love relationship and their pursuit of freedom embody the desire for justice and freedom in human nature. Even in the darkest environment, individuals can still maintain inner strength and hope.
